New of the World activity 1

I should have everyone's signed course criteria sheet at this time.

Coming up: tomorrow you will be asked to write out the First Amendment from memorization. It should be perfect!  Homework grade.

In class: each of you will select a country from the "country box" and find a contemporary news article associated with your country.

On the blog: write your name, the name of your country, its continental location and countries nearby, the source of your information, the title and reporter's name and a one to two line synopsis of the article. Please post.

If you are absent, I will assign you a country. This is an assignment, which will count in the 40% category. As per the criteria sheet, you have ten days to make this up, if the absence is LEGAL; after that time the assignment is worth 50 points.

    Reporter: John Wessels/Oxfam

Synopsis: The outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been causing turmoil since August 1st and took 90 lives since that time. This outbreak has appeared all around Africa from Mangina to Liberia to Guinea, and for the 9th time in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and this goes to show how the disease is not yet under wraps, and because the locations tend to be in hostile places, they tend not to want to go out and get help out of fear that the centers for help are "prisons" or "places of death," which then leads to more and more spread and death, of and from the disease, within the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The epidemic is not only ending lives, and causing sickness, but it is disturbing family life and the selling of goods.

The article "China holds one million Uighur Muslims in concentration camps" written by Khaled A Beydoun and published by Aljazeera addresses a situation not well-known but deserves international attention. Not only is it an ethnic-cleansing of Uighur's but also religious discrimination of Muslims. The Chinese government is claiming to be "combating terrorism" but is using it just as an excuse to "transform" and force change onto the Uighur Muslims' culture and religious beliefs.
