Rubric for evaluating inverted pyramid

 stories

Ace reporter
Good
Fair
Poor

This story — so professional one would think it were cut from a professional news publication — convincingly demonstrates mastery of the inverted pyramid form by doing the following:

with precision, arranges the key facts of the story from most important to least important

relegates background information — information the writer could have known before the event — to a place below all new information

 is devoid of unattributed opinion

artfully illustrates points with interesting, well-punctuated and well-attributed quotations; a transition is used to introduce each quotation.

is a model of brevity, using few words to maximum effect.

avoids passive voice except in the rare cases when it is merited

shows few, if any, errors in the conventions of written English

This solid inverted pyramid story, while not as impressive as that written by the Ace Reporter, consistently does most or all of the following:

arranges the key facts of the story from most important to least important

generally relegates background information — information the writer could have known before the event — to a place below all new information

 is devoid of unattributed opinion

illustrates points with interesting, well-punctuated and well-attributed quotations; a transition is used to introduce each quotation

is for the most part concise

generally avoids passive voice except in the rare cases when it is merited

shows few, if any, errors in the conventions of written English.

This story suggests general awareness of the requirements for an inverted pyramid story, but does not suggest great prowess in meeting those requirements. This lead does much or all of the following:

unconvincingly arranges the facts of the story from most important to least important

in some cases, fails to keep background information in its place at the bottom of the story

 may include minor unattributed opinion

sometimes illustrates points with quotations but may do so awkwardly and without adequate transitions or

shows too little attention to the need for brevity

 may slip into passive voice

shows some errors in the conventions of written English.

These story doesn’t meaningfully address the assignment. This lead does much or all of the following:

either does not have all the basic facts or shows clear errors in organizing them from most to least important

fails to keep background information in its place at the bottom of the story

is bereft of meaningful, supportive quotations; may fail to introduce quotations at all

 includes significant unattributed opinion

noticeable over-use of the passive voice

 is wordy

shows multiple errors in the conventions of written English.

New Zealand PM tells British backpacker's family: She should've been safe with us

British backpacker Grace Millane should have been safe on her trip to New Zealand, a place that prides itself on manaakitanga, the country's prime minister said
Jacinda Ardern invoked manaakitanga -- a word from the Maori, New Zealand's indigenous Polynesian people, meaning hospitality -- in delivering an apology to the 22-year-old's family. She was speaking during her weekly post-Cabinet news conference, Radio New Zealand reported.
"From the Kiwis I have spoken to, there is this overwhelming sense of shame that this has happened in our country, a place that prides itself on its hospitality, on its manaakitanga, especially to those who are visiting our shores," Ardern said.
"So on behalf of New Zealand, I want to apologize to Grace's family: Your daughter should have been safe here and she wasn't and I'm sorry for that."
A 26-year-old man accused of killing Millane made his first appearance in a New Zealand's Auckland District Court Monday, RNZ reported.
Millane was last seen at the Auckland city center December 1. A body believed to be that of the missing woman was found in a wooded area in the Waitakere Ranges, west of central Auckland, police said Sunday.
Police previously said that a man seen with her in Auckland the night she disappeared would be charged in her death.
Presiding Judge Evangelos Thomas denied the man's request to have his name suppressed, but his defense lawyer immediately appealed that decision, meaning he cannot be publicly identified for 20 days, RNZ reported.
The man -- who appeared in court wearing a blue jumpsuit -- was remanded to custody until he appears in court in January, the broadcaster reported. Thomas addressed Millane's family members at the court hearing, RNZ said.
"I don't know what we say to you at this time. Your grief must be desperate," it quoted him as saying. "All of us hope that justice for Grace is fair, swift and ultimately brings you some peace."
Detective Inspector Scott Beard said Sunday afternoon that the body found in the Waitakere Ranges was yet to be identified.
"The formal identification process will now take place. However, based on the evidence we have gathered over the past few days, we expect that this is Grace. Obviously this brings the search for Grace to an end," Beard said in a statement. "It is an unbearable time for the Millane family, and our hearts go out to them."
Beard issued an appeal for sightings of a 2016 red Toyota Corolla hatchback hired from a rental company.

City: No New Year's Eve fireworks for 2018

    by WHAM
The City of Rochester will not be lighting up the night on the last day of the year.
City officials confirmed Monday that fireworks will not be held on New Year's Eve in Rochester.
“This year the City decided to reinvest some of the New Year’s Eve fireworks funds for the ROC Holiday Village," City Communications Director James Smith said in an emailed statement. "The fireworks were not drawing large crowds. Taking place over four weekends, the City of Rochester ROC Holiday Village has brought thousands of people Downtown to experience the beauty of winter and the holiday season in Rochester. We look forward to seeing this event become a new holiday tradition for families to enjoy year after year
“We invite everyone to come to the annual New Year’s Eve family celebration at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center, which this year will run from 6 to 9 p.m.”
"We want people to be able to come into downtown Rochester and enjoy the festivities, but not just have it be on one day," Mayor Lovely Warren told 13WHAM. "We are continuing making sure, on New Year’s night, families get to come to the Convention Center and have a great time, but all throughout the month of December, in partnership with our Roc Holiday Village folks, we invested in that, and being able to have parents come out and children come out, enjoy the ice skating, enjoy spending time with Santa and doing crafts. We thought that was a better use of funding, since we noticed attendance (for the fireworks) had gone down significantly."
Mayor Warren says the annual Family Night Out event will still be held at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center on New Year's Eve.
"We just want people to enjoy all the winter life in downtown Rochester," she said.
Last year, the city hosted free ice skating at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park and a family-friendly party at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center.

    1. Reality of senior year
      Frustrations
      By Phonemani Kongmany

Senior year will be a roller coaster. Students find themselves struggling to find balance between school, work and home while trying to determine plans for college and discovering who they are.

Some students walk into senior year full of expectations of seniority, easy school days, little to no homework and lots of stress with college applications, scholarship processes, financial aid, etc.).

Senior, Faduma Abdi, had no senior expectations. She feels like it’s just another year of high school.

Although, “school mixed with home, work, and college applications, it is a bit overwhelming,” said Abdi.

It is difficult to balance school and work among other responsibilities while trying to plan for the future.

Future plans motivate students to put forth the effort of staying on top of their studies instead of being frustrated with piles of work.

“All of your high school years determine the rest of your life,” said Abdi.

In contrast, senior Tayah Smith expects senior year to be fun.

“Nothing has changed, everything is how I expected it to be,” said Smith.

Participating in activities such as senior trip, senior day of service, senior skip day and cap and gown pictures all fall into that category.

During senior year, great memories will be made. Stressing over college applications, exams and preparing for the unexpected makes graduation worth it.

“Senior year is the year everyone pushes you to get everything done,” said senior Quentin Sloan.

Whether it is a college rejection or losing out on one of the biggest opportunities of your life, seniors are required to adjust into their adult life within a short amount of time.

“This is the moment that many have been waiting for,” said Sloan.

It will be exciting and emotional.

Students anticipate for the day they walk across the stage and receive their diploma, but also are reaching to find themselves along the way.

“Try to spend more time with the people you love that make you happy, in the long run you might distance yourself to find who you are but being able to move forward on your own helps a lot when you have a clear mindset,” said Sloan.

High school seniors are on the edge of contemplating what might be some of their biggest decisions while figuring out how to manage their life; remaining true to themselves is part of it.

      1. This topic can also be connected to stress and peer pressure that seniors face, it ties everything together because you mention about expectations and college, work, school, lots of responsibilities we all have to face. We seniors didn't choose to burden ourselves but its because peer pressure and responsibility we are obligated to do so.

This is true, a lot of seniors have taken all of the classes needed for graduation in June, but for some they either have finished all the required classes, or feel it would be best to fill their schedule up for college applications and scholarships.

      3. I like the topic, but I do feel you could have expanded on it a bit more. You're headline is talking about the frustrations of senior year, but you don't really go in depth about those frustrations and how they effect a senior and what they are caused but you simply glide across them. You could also work on the formatting, it seems a bit all over the place and not in inverted pyramid style. The topic is solid, and I do like the comparison of the quotes with some saying senior year is rough and some saying it's fun, but overall, the execution could have been better.

    2. Senior process and struggle
      By Rae’Iona Peterson

Senior year is craming from start to finish, although all the stress and massive craming may be worth it. A senior in highschool endures much stress. Studying, testing, working, and sleeping takes over there lives.

On average, according to the National Survey of Student Engagement’s findings, the time students spend on preparing for class is about 17 hours each week. Senior students have very little time to study because of timing and scheduled work.

According to one of School of the Arts students,”Studying is a big issue. I’m not big in studying. I get really distracted, sometimes i can’t concentrate.”,said a senior from School of the Arts. Enough said senior studying can be intense.

Working while in school, for seniors can cause a bad sleep habit or schedule. Irregular sleep patterns can in time create insomnia. Loss of sleep can make you very irritable and cranky as a senior. “It is tiring, because i work on weekends late night, so i don’t get enough time for lost sleep during the weekday” said a senior in School of the Arts.

The senior students don’t sleep, or so we thought, a student said, “On average, I go to bed 11:30-12:00 and wake up 5:30 and that's an average day of not studying”, said the student. This is just 6 hours of sleep.

According to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, “Adolescents are notorious for not getting enough sleep. The average amount of sleep that teenagers get is between 7 and 7 ¼ hours. However, they need between 9 and 9 ½ hours (studies show that most teenagers need exactly 9 ¼ hours of sleep)”.

Seniors feel very pressured to pass and apply for college, all the stress messes up the sleep patterns, which eventually will hurt there thinking and focusing skills. A senior at SOTA said, “ Applying to colleges is stressful and thinking about how i’ll pay is even more stressful”.

Being a senior can be very stressful, but pushing through it all can earn you a lot.

    3. Fear strikes schools all over the world
      Kids worry about safety
      By Juliana Bermudez

Children fear for their lives everyday as they walk through the halls of their ‘safe place’ not knowing what could happen next.

Since 1970, there have been 1,300 school shootings. The highest year being 2018 with 82 incidents. Parents are saying goodbye to their children every morning and not knowing if it’ll be the last time they’ll ever talk to them.

“Gotta be cautious”, says student Joshua Jackson at School of the Arts in Rochester, New York.

Students are afraid of coming to school. Absences rise in the population of students as more and more parents are keeping their children from school.

The number of homeschoolers rise as parents are avoiding any probability of a shooting. Parents are losing faith in public schools and their ability to protect students from harm.

“I do fear coming to school because of all the stories coming out about the shootings” says Andrea Ramos, also a student at School of the Arts.

Psychologists are stating that unhealthy anxiety is building up within these students.

“It makes my anxiety worse that I now have to be aware of my surroundings at school, which should be one of my safe places” says Ramos, “I shouldn’t be scared for my life at school.”

This story does an excellent job of showing the fear that my friends, my family, and I feel every time we go into school. Also, the line "Parents are saying goodbye to their children every morning and not knowing if it’ll be the last time they’ll ever talk to them." from the story does fantastic job of showing the emotion severity of the topic.

    5. Redefining Fashion In The Modern Day Fashion Industry
Knowing the Difference between Fashion and Style
      By: Trinity Cotton

By definition Fashion is 1): the prevailing style (as in dress) during a particular time or 2): a garment in such a style, according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

Fashion is all about what is trending and style is what you personally feel is most comfortable. For example, runway models that you see walking during New York Fashion Week (NYFW) have on beautiful designs that are trending in the fashion world but that’s not to say that’s what they would wear in their everyday lives. According to pastemagazine.com “personal style has become more popular than ever… marking the rise of individual fashion consciousness.”

Today is the era of self expression, self acceptance and daring to be different. “The height of luxury is personalization” said pastemagazine.com then they continued on to say “Owning name brands is not nearly as powerful as having an individual, curated style.” People now thrive off of seeing others express their own personal style, in a sense people who have trouble expressing their own style somewhat begin to live vicariously through those who do not.

Fashion and style go hand and hand because without the fashion aspect people wouldn’t be able to make the choices they make regarding their own personal style. The products designers make, are put out to the public and then the consumer comes and takes it home to make it what they want.

Fashion and style are like peanut butter and jelly they mix great together but they can also stand on their own as their own separate functions. Keeping up with the latest fashion is important, but developing your own personal style is essential as well. Simply put, “fashion” can be defined and labeled from the outside looking in and style is what you do to make it your own.

    6. The cycle continues -
      Sentiments of today’s eighth graders
      by Elyse Spencer

Eighth graders in present day 2018 are feeling the pressure of school work, puberty, and responsibilities during this new school year.

At this age, “eighth grader’s brain is developing the capacity to reason, remember, and learn from mistakes,” journalist Hank Pellissier said in his June 2018 article on eighth grader’s brain.

The brain of this average 13-year old “is growing and interconnecting,” Pellissier said, “but patience is required.” On the brink on high school, the stress and pressure is heavy for eighth graders.

Inside of the Rochester City School District School, School of the Arts, present eighth graders note how the past four months have treated them.

“I feel like it’s a lot more work than seventh grade,” Elani Spencer said. “”They expect way more from us now.”

When asked if eighth grade was stressful, Spencer, and three other eighth graders said that it is “stressful.” “I’m stressed all the time,” Spencer said.

“It’s okay kind of, it’s not good but it’s not bad,” Janiya James Newton said. “It makes me feel like it’s not preparing me at all,” was Newton’s response to the question, ‘Are you feeling ready for ninth grade now?’

The homework was agreed upon to be weighing the eighth graders down, as they feel the teachers are unfair and what they are learning won’t be needed in the future.

At this stage in life, an eighth grader thinks is a ‘paradoxical,’ neurology professor at Harvard Medical Center, Frances Jensen said. They have “‘very sharp brains, but they’re not quite sure what to do with them’.”

With new stress from school, and the changing functions of the brain, eighth graders must learn information and school, and their place in the world as they enter their teenage years.

      1. There isn't really too much pressure on an eighth graders brains compared to higher levels, considering the only thing they struggle with the most is social and probably evolving aspects of themselves. It is an interesting perspective though because they will be entering high school, which probably no one is ready for.

    7. Disproportionate Representation of SOTA Majors
      Katie Haberberger

There may be a disproportionate representation of the SOTA majors between non performing majors and performing majors.

The SOTA’s non performing majors have very little publicity compared to the performing majors. The representation of talent and skill for non performing majors such as visual arts, theater tech and creative writing comes short in comparison to performing majors.

The events at SOTA are often advertised, events such as the plays or dance concert have been highly advertised in the school. SOTA Stream News advertises plays and popular events, the event calendar on the website and many classrooms show these events but give little details into the non performing major’s events like coffee house.

“No we don’t because we are doing contests and events such as coffee house but no one knows about it or honestly cares about it” Raina, Creative Writing.

In the past the art shows have been announced only the day of the show and each show is set before a big event or it gets minimal traffic. Another example of this is the fact that the visual arts openings are grouped together and treated like one event.

Many members of the student body, specifically members of non performing majors have called attention to this issue. Many teachers like Susan Rudy have suggested to have the student body advertise themselves.

“They don’t get as much credit or publicity,” Ali, theater Tech, “for example nobody talks about coffee house readings or visual art major’s shows and theater tech doesn’t get credit for shows”.

I agree with this article. I also feel that many people don't acknowledge some majors. The school is mostly recognized for majors that perform a lot like concerts, shows, plays.
As a Creative Writing major, I have performed in many spoken word events, but I feel like people don't give our department enough credit for the things that we do. Only Creative Writing majors know the hard work and all the things that we get involve in. Most of the time, we get involve in contest and events out of school that pertain to our major, so most of the school is not aware.
We should recognize every department and acknowledge the talents and skills by providing more information about events considering all majors.

    8. High School seniors applying for College ask
      ‘How do I stand out?’
      By Faduma Abdi

The fall of senior year is when the scrambling to get college applications in starts. Seniors search for ways to appeal to colleges and stand out among other applicants.

There's the popular and widespread worry of not having the grade average or test scores that qualify to get into a certain school.

“I was worried that maybe my SAT scores wouldn’t meet the minimum requirements for certain schools,” says senior Phonemani Kongmany.

Besides academics, extracurricular activities also play a role in several college admissions decisions. Seniors start panicking that they don’t have enough to brag about in their applications or that someone else's accomplishments overshadows theirs.

“I was worried because I wasn’t involved in much besides academics so that part of my application would be empty," says Kongmany.

Also, as the competitive aspect of some colleges increase, students would like their involvements outside of school to also be a main consideration.

“It’s not that I don’t have the scores or the grades, but would these colleges look past that and into my life because they're extremely competitive regarding grades,” says senior Elyse Spencer.

As colleges start reaching their decisions, students get to see whether their anxieties and efforts paid off.

    9. Why are high schoolers always late? Science
      By: Ja’Miah Smith

Attendance rates and graduation rates have been proven to improve when high schools start at 8:30 a.m. or later.

“A teen who rises for school at 6:30 a.m. is fighting against a biological force of sleepiness,” said the National Sleep Foundation. After puberty, teenagers bodies tell them to go to sleep later and wake up later, and therefore with most schools starting so early, it goes against the grain of teenagers biological process.

According to the website Start School Later, “over 10% of U.S. high schools start the school day before 7:30 a.m., 42.5% before 8 a.m., and only 14.4% at 8:30 a.m. or later.” With most high schools starting before 8:30 a.m., and teenagers sleeping patterns changing due to puberty, it is no surprise that teenagers are always late to school.

The National Sleep Foundation, as well as The American Academy of Pediatrics, have recommended that high schools start 8:30 a.m. or later to give students the proper amount of time to sleep, but most of America’s school districts have failed to follow this due to logistic issues such as bus schedules, and extracurricular activities.

Early school start times force adolescents against their biological sleeping patterns, and “adolescents who do not get enough sleep are more likely to be overweight, not engage in daily physical activity, suffer from symptoms of depression, engage in unhealthy risk behaviors such as drinking, smoking tobacco, and using illicit drugs, and perform poorly in school,” said the website CDC.

The early school start times are a primary cause to the reason teenagers are often late. That lack of sleep makes it harder to get up on time and even harder to perform well in school, end even in life. When schools shift their schedules, teens will then benefit, as will the amount of tardiness and absenteeism decrease.

“For example, seven high schools in Minneapolis moved their start times from 7:25 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and tested the outcomes for their students. As a result of the change, the teens got five or more extra hours of sleep per week, and attendance and enrollment rates went up, as did alertness. Meanwhile, student-reported depression went down...those who went to a school that started at 8:37 a.m. reported sleeping an hour more on school nights. The ones who started at 7:15 a.m. were tardy four times as often and had significantly worse grades,” said the National Sleep Foundation.

Changing the question from why are you late to is the school start time too early, would likely change the amount of tardiness and absenteeism within high school students. Moving start times is one major step in a larger picture of ensuring that adolescents get the sleep they need, as well as get to school on time.

    10. Snack rule seriousness
      By Anna Perez
Fed up by not being fed; students feel that they should be able to eat throughout the school day to keep them motivated and energized.
RCSD students are angry that they cannot have snacks in school nor purchase snacks from the vending machine during the school day, and have to wait until dismissal for the vending machines to be accessible.
Speaking with students from School of the arts #74, they have expressed their annoyance with this rule. Multiple students have shown their aggravation very prominently.
A student , Coralys Torres stated “ They are useless. It’s a waste of money, hurting the school economically by wasting money on snacks but not making a profit.” she also said “Kids have to rush at the end of the school day to buy what they want before going home.”
Studies show that students need to eat in order to have energy to do their school work. “You can not concentrate during class because your stomach is rumbling” www.dobienews wrote.
Another student, Malikya R. said “What’s the purpose of having vending machines if we can’t use them when we want? It starves us.”
SOTA has a strict no eating policy in classes, which students can only eat them at lunch time. This is to prevent rodents from roaming around, but students do not agree they should suffer for this reason.
“I understand the rat thing but if the other reason why we can’t sell or eat snacks in school is because of nutritional reasons, then why can’t they just let us buy healthy snacks?” student ,Kaila Pena says.
RCSD is working on helping students make better food choices by filling vending machines with healthier food.Though students have to wait until after school, some may think this is beneficial to students who play sports and need to eat for energy.
students are fighting a controversial battle with the school district that is a hard debate, but they are hopeful for a change.

      1. I agree, most children/ teens need to eat more than once every 7 hours. and people with anemia need much more nutrients than the normal person. kids should be allowed to snack especially if they provide it for themselves

      2. Interesting topic, and an important one as well. We might not think about the factors that effect our school day and the importance of eating to learn successfully. I say change the candy and chips with fruit and energybars!

    11. Everything isn’t always black and white.
The story of everyday artistic runway styles.
      By: Abrianna Edwards

For thousands of years tattoos and/or paint were used to symbolize culture, society, and ones identity. Recently this concept became an everyday trend that has hit the runways and even the streets. Instead of expressing feelings through flat surfaces these artists preferred live action to show their creativity.

In recent studies tattoos if done right and properly have shown no impact on patients health.

Dorothy Parker a high school teacher stated ‘It’s a personal decision, of course, but too often people make a long term commitment based upon a transitory situation or relationship’ with this she goes on to state about how over the years the body changes and would recommend picking a place on one’s canvas that stays constant.

With age comes wrinkles, fat, stretch marks, and maybe even scars but for a lot of people their ink tells their story so majority of the people with body art don't care how they look or the future outcome because of the ink.

As for a highschool foreign exchange student Niccolo Bernotti from Italy said ‘tattoos that are done properly with detail, time, effort and creativity I don’t mind but it's when the concept isn't taken seriously that they start looking ugly and meaningless’ as for body painting goes he found it brilliant and courageous to go beyond the norm.

Body art for men, women, teens, or grown adults change the way society looks at one another and if there's so much of one thing people just start accepting it because they realize it's never gonna go away.

    12. Exchange student claims this is the best year of her life
      By: Amanda Sandberg Faetten
      Published: 19th of December 2018

The exchange student Arianna Borgo from Italy decided to do an exchange year in America, and claims that it is the best decision she has ever made.

Arianna’s imagination of a year abroad started two years ago, when her Italian teacher told the class about a girl who had gone to New Zealand, and pointed out how she thought Arianna would be the perfect, open-minded person to do an exchange year. Left with this thought, Arianna talked to her parents and together decided that this would be interesting for a fifteen-year-old girl.

Now, two years later, she is sitting in her host family’s coach in a big house in Rochester, New York, surrounded with christmas decorations and describing how much she love living in America. “I just feel like this is the right place for me right now, and I wouldn't like to be any other place than right here,” Arianna says with a smile on her face. “This is the best year of my life”, she continues. She has discovered that world is so much more than her own room, city, school and daily life routines.

She is especially thankful for have got to know her new American family, who she absolutely loves. “I remember I thought they were crazy at first because they decided to host a person from the other part of the world. Open up their house to a person they knew only from skyping a few times and the application I wrote. They are very brave to do something like that. I really love them.” She lives with her host mom Barb and her host dad Mike, who have hosted once before. Arianna’s host grandparents and their two cats, also live with them in a big house in Rochester, New York. To watch holidays movies with the whole family, to see plays and musicals at the theaters, to go Christmas shopping and make food together are Ariana's favorite activities to do with her host family. She has two host siblings, one that lives across the street, and another one living in Alaska, but who comes home for holidays.

Arianna is a visual arts major at School of the Arts and points out how good it is that the teachers are passionate about their classes, which makes her interested in every course she takes. Her American school is remarkably bigger than the schools she attended in Italy, and the despite her first weeks of confusion with directions and classes, she feels comfortable in the hallway and the classes. She has got many new friends, is now a part of the school, and starts to feel more and more like she is living the life of an american teenager.

Through the exchange student organization ‘CIEE’, exchange students like Ariana improve their English immeasurably, learn about other cultures, but most of all learn about themselves.

Those who do an exchange year are not only being exposed to a different society and culture but bringing their own with them. It's interesting to me that Arianna thought her host family was brave and even crazy for allowing a stranger into their home when she's the one who's traveling across an ocean to live with with strangers! I can't imagine studying abroad in high school, I don't think I have the guts to do it so young. I'd really love to do study abroad in college though it's such an amazing opportunity.

    13. Why is it still around?
      By Maricarla Diaz Almeida

Bullying is not only timeless but also universal. From the biggest beating to small whispered under the breath insults. Many suffer from this, the young the old. It can cause someone to kill themselves or cause someone else harm.

“Many people suffer from this, I’ve suffered from it sure it’s made me a stronger person but that still doesn’t make it okay! I don’t want my children to suffer from it as well. I’ve seen on the news so many people killing themselves because of this. It’s sick and disgusting and whoever does it needs to be stopped.” said Zurely, mother of two who are in elementary.

But thankfully many have spoken out about it and started organizations against it but will it be enough? Parents grow more and more concerned about their children being bullied. Social media plays a big part of this.

Cyberbullying is real and it’s growing rapidly. StopBullying.gov is an web organization who teach kids how to deal with bullying and what they should do if they are being bullied.

No one really knows what to do at first but with a guiding hand they can be shown that it is not okay to sit in the dark and do nothing.

“The only people who do it are people who are insecure of themselves, they see someone being who they really are and become jealous and angry because they can’t have that for any reason so they take it out on someone else!” said Yaimara, mother of three and she also says, “I should know since I’ve been a victim of a situation similar to this one.”

    15. Lockdown drills do not make students feel safe in their school
      by Raina Becker

Lockdown drills have been done in other schools in the Rochester City School District for quite some time now though, at School of the Arts, the regular occurrence of them only began in the past couple years.

At SOTA when the word "lockdown" is repeated three times over the loudspeaker, students go into autopilot. They get up from their desks, leave their belongings behind and move to a designated area of the room. The one area that teachers in every class have pointed out that can not be seen from the door.

The last few lockdowns have all been successful but when asked if they felt their school was prepared to go through a real lockdown most students replied with a quick and certain “no” with many of them even laughing.

One student, Emani Aquino a senior at SOTA said: “even with how normal [school shootings] are today, you can never really be prepared for your school to be shot up”.

She was not alone in her thoughts. Many other kids also felt that it is a situation you can not truly prepare for but at the same time, it’s a situation that most said they won’t be surprised to find themselves in.

Some students though feel that their school administration is prepared, the safety issues lay with the students. When asked if her school would be prepared in a situation where a real lockdown was issued senior Katie Haberberger said: “the student body is not [ready]...the kids don’t know how to act”.

This was a concern of many students. Lots feared that in an actual emergency their peers would either not take the situation seriously or go into complete panic.

Student Kaneil Reid said that he worries about how other students will react “especially after seeing what happened at that one school”.

The school Kaneil Reid was referring to is Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs, Florida. Recently the school went into a code red that, though was a drill, was announced as an actual threat.

The result was the teachers and student body bracing themselves for the worse. It was reported that students there vomited from fear, suffered asema attacks and even passed out.

Though nothing like the incident at Lake Brantley has happened at SOTA many students here do have doubts and fears with the procedure of the lockdown.

When students asked why they are to leave their bags at their desks, teachers have told students that it is one, because there is no time to waste. Though they have also been told that it is because the idea is that the supposed school shooter will see the empty abandoned classroom and assume students evacuated.

Another senior at SOTA, Mariangelis Gonzalez said “wouldn’t the shooter know the procedure?” and she’s far from alone in this fear. Fellow senior, Luz Ortiz had similar thoughts saying that it wouldn’t take long before the shooter realizes “if I can’t see any kids but there are parts of the room I can’t see then obviously that’s where they are” the question on everyone’s mind is: what lengths would a shooter go to?

For many students, how safe they feel in lockdown is based on where in the school they are. Multiple students cited Susan Rudy’s classroom as where they’d want to be in the event of a school shooting.

“If I’m in Rudy’s room there’s the dark room which has no windows and has a door that can be locked and that’s on top of the door that leads to the hall, so in that room, we have multiple locked doors to get behind,” said sophomore Lorelei Becker.

School no longer feels like a safe place to many kids. Students around the country work out survival plans—where they could hide, how they could protect themselves and who they’d call if hope was lost. Though lockdown drills are a necessary procedure, they can’t do anything about the fear that has spread though the nation.

School safety has been an important topic as many students and parents feel concerned. Every year we go through procedures and although we are guided through it, it still doesn't feel safe. This has been a very relevant topic since the school shooting that occurred early in 2018. In older generations, students had procedures to protect themselves from airplane bombs. Other generations had drills to protect against natural disasters. Students have encountered many procedures. Why can't we just get an education? Why do we have to go through all of this?

      4. School shootings are a hot topic that with enough preparation it still won't be good enough. Although with the way society is dealing with these issues it needs to be taken seriously with 100% cooperation, students and teachers alike need to be ready for any emergency.

    16. Life as a middle schooler. Is it that hard?
      by Semaj Cruz

Middle School is probably one of the most uncomfortable times in anyone's life. Between new responsibility and most times a new school; it can be stressful.
A new school means new people, and new friends to make. “I knew no one, it was a little scary at first.” said a 7th grader I stopped in the hallway. An 8th grader stated that he was a lot less anxious coming back for his second year.
Middle school can be like a culture shock to some kids. A lot of them are used to a cushioned learning process. The student’s responsibility for displaying the information learned grows to a pace that some must adjust to. In middle school there is a lot less cushion and more accountability.
Middle school can be fun as well. With those new friends come new interest and ideas. There are more opportunities to learn new things and to start a student's growth into an adult. Developing work ethic, creating a positive idea of responsibility, and making possible lifetime friends. Middle school is the important step towards growth as an individual.

    17. Recent school hysteria leads to increased school security.
      By Graham Gauthier

This past week was marked with anxiousness and hysteria as threats of armed assault filled the halls of our school on Tuesday.

Due to our country's current climate regarding safety in the classroom, there was a number of different reactions from the entire populus. This included outrage from the schools parents who felt out of the loop and frantic, the administration taking quick defensive action with local authorities, as well as a general sense of borderline hysteria that can be associated with high school drama.

The resulting outcome would come by way of the administration announcing increased security for the remainder of the fall semester as well as rolling out the scanning machines for entering students once more.

When speaking with faculty and students who have attended school in the past week, a common message began to arise. When talking about the increased security and lock down drills, I was told, “It is a necessary evil,” by Ash’er Phillips, “it may be improbable that our school will be next, but it’s important in order to grant people peace of mind”.

Faculty member Mr O’Kane said, “I was surprised to hear that we weren’t already scanning everyone who entered the building prior to last week’s events”. Making the question arise, was our school doing enough to keep the student body safe? Or was this scare a wake up call to administrators that we are not to put our guard down at any point?

Either way, the crisis was averted with everyone safe and sound, ready to enjoy the holidays.

Whether we like to say it or not electronics has taken over this era we live in; it has taken over our everyday life.

Although there are positive effects of electronics such as enhancing the general knowledge by providing us information from around the world, allowing people to communicate from afar; their are also negative effects of electronics such as cyberbullying, keeping people indoors instead of outdoors, relying on our devices all the time. That's only a part of it.

"Many people suffer from depression due to what people say behind a screen; it's cruel." stated Kiley Jones a student from Oakfield high school.

Cyberbullying affects many people due to being able to use electronics to communicate. Recent studies about cyberbullying rates have found that about 1 in 4 teens have been the victims of cyberbullying, and about 1 in 6 admit to having cyberbullied someone. The result of being cyber bullied shown in studies have found a link between bullying  and a higher risk of mental health problems; like depression.

A friend of mine decided to speak up "They help with our daily lives" says Joshua Jackson a senior who attends SOTA. He exclaims his reasoning for that is "I am provided with so much information!"

“So many people get so distracted from what’s in front of us; it’s just sad.” said Sasha Ruptash a junior who attends SOTA.

Even if you go all day without touching your cell phone once, just having it visible nearby may distract you from complex tasks, according to new research in the journal Social Psychology.

Based on this information there are many negative and positive things from using electronics; you just need to be careful how you use electronics it can be dangerous to you or someone else.

    19. The natural hair movement
      Embracement
      By Elizabeth Medina

Within recent years, women have gained confidence to wear their naturally instead of manipulating it to other’s satisfaction.

It is the individual's choice whether to go natural or manipulate it in some way but there are many reasons to behind their specific choice. People expressing their hair has made an impact on today’s society. Many have caused damage to their natural hair state by permanent alteration. They search for some sort of satisfaction of themselves through their hair.

“Changing our hair can mean dealing with the blank stares, mindless questions, and microaggressions in the workplace from peers when you walk in with natural hair and no one else looks like you.” Digital beauty editor Maya Allen said in her late August 2018 article about the natural hair movement. “My hair depends on my mood. Your hair doesn’t define you as a person.” says Elyse Spencer, a student at School of the Arts.

Many workplaces have considered natural hair to be “unprofessional” for it not meeting others’ standards. Early stereotypes have suggested that women with curly or kinky hair were “not normal” or “out of place”.

Throughout the years, those stereotypes have been broken down. Many changes have globally gone through this shock and awe stage.

Our society glorifies hair to the point where individuals feel the need to define what “perfect” hair is. “If you change yourself to make yourself happy then that’s okay. But if it's to please someone else, then no.” says Spencer.

Women today struggle to embrace their hair in its natural form after so many years of being conditioned to reject their hair’s natural beauty.

    20. The Reality of Senior Year
Life as a senior at its finest(and most stressful) moments
      By: Esther Ngo-Oum
The reality is this-- for most people, senior year is not all what it’s cracked up to be. You walk in thinking that it’s going to be a breeze and walk across the stage being grateful that you made it through.

For some people, being a senior doesn’t faze them at all. For others however, it’s quite the opposite.

Senior Andrea Ramos had her thoughts on the prospect of senior year. “At the beginning of senior year, I thought it wouldn’t be as stressful and i would be fun and not have as much procrastination.”

Now that she has had a taste of reality, she begs to differ.

“Senior year so far has not been the best, at least from my point of view. It has been stressful and there are more things to worry about such as college and meeting due dates and also trying to balance school and work,” says Ramos.

Every student has their main goal that they want to achieve, whether it is becoming a doctor, lawyer or going pro, the feel like they need to excel in their senior year of highschool to achieve said goals.

Although this kind of mentality is ideal for a young adult wanting to further their education, this is the center for stress.

Another senior stated that “Senior year for me hasn’t been great not because of school itself, but because of family issues. In my opinion, not being able to put my best foot forward without getting distracted has been difficult.”

Dealing with loss in a family or personal struggles can add up, along with not being mentally prepared for the workload that has been tossed on your desk.

As the days are being counted down until high school seniors walk across that stage, they now face the music of finding who they really are as a person and figuring out who they want to become as they progress in life.

    21. The College Board SAT Test: Draining Money From the Youth
      By Ash’er

18-year-old Devonte Manning is a high school Senior in Bath, NY, aspiring to attend R.I.T for Mechanical engineering within the following year, however, there's one issue—his SAT scores. Manning scoring 1040 on the SAT falling short of the 1285 admission requirement of R.I.T. Like many other Youths, Manning finds himself at an ultimatum; Paying The College Board for SAT prep and another test or become a less viable acceptees.

SAT prep can become exceptionally expensive, especially to prospective college applicants who may be paying for Caps and Gowns as well as college applications which on average cost $50 dollars. “You can’t really apply to a single college. You can never be one hundred percent sure that you'll be accepted and you can't say that it's necessarily easy to pay for both [SAT]prep and multiple college admissions,” said Manning.

Students should expect SAT Prep to be quite costly. Official SAT Study guides cost just short of $30, a PSAT, as well as PSAT 10 test booklets will cost $16 each.

Official online SAT study course cost $70 for one year, additionally live tutors may range from $30-$150 per hour. Those who have taken the SAT have options of a $12 score report, $55 dollar multiple choice verification, as well as a $55 essay score verification. “The money really sneaks up on you… 50 here 50 there. Next thing you know you’re broke even before you pay for the next test” said Manning.

Though official preparation for the SAT may be costly many find it to be lackluster and consistently deceiving.

Teacher Kaelim Williams from School of the Arts, Rochester said “It’s incredibly deceiving. The PSAT is not at all accurate to portraying your actual SAT scores would look like. Some Kids find they may have a 1200 maybe and walk out of the test room with a 960.”

School of the Arts Alumni Kadisha Phillips said “it was so so common to see people pay so much to study, but nothing more important than knowing what exactly you got wrong to assist you in your studies. It's a shame that you’d be paying around $250 to take two complete tests with score reports.”

Still, youth finding themselves struggling to meet the standards of colleges also find themselves struggling to find the money necessary to boost their scores. “If the colleges want 1250 I need a 1250.” said Manning. “It’s a good education and a degree, you can’t get anywhere without one.”

Though The College Board, being a not-for-profit organization has a revenue of $200,000,000 and a profit of $ 62,000,000. “They’re always grabbing at students money.” Said Rashida Burch Washington, executive producer of RCTV. Of course, The College Board does charge for small services that are exempt from fee waivers, giving higher income students better-studying options as well as becoming more viable acceptees in college applications.

“They will charge you for essentially every service possible at the end of the day they're a business and a profitable one at that.” said Washington. Indeed, the averages for College Board executives is $355,271 per year as well as previous presidents of The College Board earning up to $1.3million.

The College Board siphons money away from students with the intent to capitalize off the anxiety and perceived necessity of the SAT, as many colleges ask for SAT/ACT minimum score application requirements. Though the College Board exclaims that they“expand access to higher education.” in actuality they created a system that bars low-income households from opportunities that higher wage household have causing them to become more viable applicants to colleges.

    22. The Great Connection
Cultures and Communities are one in the same

      Joshua Jackson

Since the beginning of civilization, cultures have been the foundation for human connection, bringing people who have been threw the same experiences and have the same beliefs together.
The origins of hip hop is the most modern example of this.
Starting in the early 70’s the components of hip hop, such as, rapping, dancing, deejaying and grafiti were slowly being brought to the public's attention from a place called south bronx.
A place where according to dazeddigital.com “became infamous during Game 2 of the 1977 World Series, when newscaster Howard Cosell noticed a nearby abandoned school engulfed in flames and not a fire truck in sight, uttering his legendary phrase, ‘“There it is ladies and gentlemen, the Bronx is burning.”’”

Between 1970 and 1980 97% of the apartments in south bronx were lost to fires, however these fire’s were never accidentally.
According to dazeddigital.com “The Bronx had been burning throughout the 70s in a massive series of fires set by arsonists working on behalf of landlords who knew they could collect more money from insurance fraud than they could from insurance fraud than they could from rent.”

These actions decimated a once thriving neighborhood, so much so they that the more fortunate classes built a train system over the area in effort to avoid it, completely ignoring the black and latino community.

That forced the people of south bronx to come together and stand up creating the culture we know today as hip which is the foundation of many urban communities throughout America.

      Bullying becomes a debate

      By: Adnilem Santiago

On Tuesday morning, School of the Arts students debate whether or not you should stand up for bullying. Many different aspects, beliefs and controversial arguments arose.

“Too often bullied victims get pushed to the shadows and bullies not stopped carry that trait for the rest of their lives. It's difficult to know what to do when you witness someone getting bullied so I just mind my business, ” said Angelica.

“ People bully as a defense mechanism, basically before you bully me, I will bully you. I’ll speak up and have the bully back up, ” said Joe.

Posters all around the school support standing up for bullying but some feel nothing really gets done. They agreed that there should be a bullying event, where the students should come together and speak upon the issue and come up with team bonding activities.

Teachers at the school strongly advocate for students to speak up if something is going on. Yet students argue that they don't feel comfortable or trust them enough because all they do is send them to the office.

“ If I see any red flags or hear anger from a student, my duty is to take action because if something happens, I won't be able to live with myself,” said Mrs. Vandermallie

The students goal is to bring bullying to light. Majority ruled it could happen, while others strongly debated nothing would get done. Seniors in the debate took it upon themselves to speak to the principal about their ideas moving forward towards bullying.

    24. Social media devours society

Major affect on views of life

      By Andrea Ramos

Social media is decreasing the amount of people having any interaction in person, but also bringing people together.

In today’s society, many prefer scrolling through the media instead of going out to actually socialize with the people around them and appreciating their surroundings.

“Social media ‘used to’ be a great way to connect with friends and get to know people...now social media is all about body shaming, bullying, haters and influencing children negatively. Social media is no longer a safe place for anyone” said Juliana Bermudez, a student at School of the Arts.

Though social media has helped people such as Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential campaign, artists to promote their music, and people socializing with others that are far away, there is a down side to this era of media.

Depression has been linked to the usage social media. Many teens look at famous figures and think to themselves that they want to be like that one day or they want to look a certain way someday. This messes with their minds and makes them feel insecure.

“Social media both helps and hinders our society. It helps by being a quick and easy way to spread the word of something or to share positive moments. It hinders the our society by setting standards that individuals everywhere feel they need to live up to when they don’t” said Elizabeth Medina, also a student at School of the Arts.

Many have been influenced by what they see on a daily basis and try make those things a goal for themselves. In reality, social media does not tell the whole story, someone can be living their worst life, but on their media page they seem as if they are doing better than everyone.

More people have access to devices and are able to go on social media and see everything that is out there without leaving their home. This has created a new generation of less active people and interaction between one another.

I personally believe you should have included more ways that social media has been beneficial for people, since you stated multiple times that it is. For example, people can use the media to get their brands out there, to help people see products or materials that'll help their health, and get opportunities that'll benefit them now and in the future.

      2. I agree that social media has given a way for people to interact with each other around the world but it also limits how much time people spend together when they have the ability to actually spend time together. It allows people to communicate with others, acting as an outlet where accounts can remain anonymous. It can give or allow people to find a release they've always wanted.

    25. Arts Vs Athletics

      Jotham Denegal

With a name like School of the Arts, Sports already gets disregarded by everyone besides the athletes and the coaches. From Fall to Spring, and Football to Baseball athletes at SOTA aren't just athletes, but are artist also that have to balance two things that they care about as one.

The survey was conducted on the School Of the Arts campus.

Coach N “ It sucks that we have to work around the arts, i know that concerts are usually once a month, but sometimes that concert can affect a game day leaving the team short handed”.

But not all coaches feel this way, similar to a lot of teachers at SOTA some of the coaches are also involved with the arts as well and think that managing your time now will make it easier in later stages in life.

With that being said, the coach’s opinions are great and all, but there would not be a coach if there were not any athletes.

Athlete G “ Don’t get me wrong i love my family from both Edison and East, but nothing would beat have a football team at SOTA, and i think that it is because our emphasis is on arts, i mean we have 3 theaters and not one field”.

With sports like Swimming, Tennis, and Football there usually aren't enough people for there to be a SOTA team, or even a place to practice, so sota joins teams like Edison and East, and then once basketball season comes they have to compete against those same teammates.

Not everyone at SOTA is an Athlete, but everyone is an artist, so of course the artist opinions matters.

Student C” Obviously we are school of the arts, but i think because we are school of the arts we usually don't get the best athletes like East or Wilson, and maybe if the teams were better we as a school would care more”.

This seems to be a common theme at SOTA the students do not really care, because the teams lose anyway.

It's expected that sports are neglected at an arts school; but we also have to take in account that coaches cost money. It is easier to condense 3 teams into one and pay 2 coaches, than have 3 separate teams and pay 6 coaches. Money is a big reason why SOTA often merges with other teams.

    27. Bumper Humor

      By: Niccolo Bernotti

Since cars were invented people always tried to express their creativity, individuality, and beliefs. The original bumper stickers were made to promote businesses and were made of paper so easy to damage. Nowadays the differences upon our beliefs can cause harmony or conflict.

Even though these stickers get a ton of attention the highest pricing for them is $15.

Carla a senior high school student said ‘bumper stickers are sometimes humorous but distracting to people on the road driving which can cause accidents or scenes’ she goes on to say that they often cause road rage if someone thinks the opposite of what’s on the car.

Recent studies have shown the stickers themselves aren’t dangerous but the people getting road rage or being distracted with them or a phone are.

Bri is also a high school student who stated ‘bumper stickers are a fun and humorous way to express your feelings to society or support a cause happening currently example lgbt or autism awareness stickers or they could be your favorite superheroes’ she went on to give positive feedback on the topic.

These popular stickers have become a phenomenon in society with younger and older citizens around the world. Even though road rage gets the best of us sometimes stickers and pieces of paper or a phone shouldn’t get the best of us

    28. Early is on time and on time is Late

      By:Malikya Russell

Tardiness determines what kind of person you want to become. School is the number one reason why individuals are always tardy due to various reasons. The need for students to get to school and class on time is very stressful.

School success and student behavior is a major factor is city school district.

Students at school of the arts stated that “School starts too early”.

Others didn’t attend school because they “missed the bus”.

With this negative attitude, individuals won’t succeed in life.

Early is on time and on time is late.

Stop complaining about going to sleep late, having too much homework, traffic being heretic in the morning, doing chores, working too late and taking too long to get dressed. Plan ahead and become this individuals that’s never late to anything or anywhere.

Having a fatigue motivation and attitude, you’re most likely setting yourself up for failure.

Cultural appropriation Is hitting social media at rapid speed

      Coralys Torres

Outbreaks across social media platforms are causing an uproar about cultural appropriation. What is it? Why is it bad? Who is affected by it?

Cultural appropriation has been an issue for decades. From makeup trends to huge artists and movies, cultural appropriation is stealing an customs and traditions from a minority culture and using it in a more dominant culture. Not to be confused with adaptation!

According to Vox, even big artists are being targeted such as Nicki MInaj in her recent “Chun-Li” as she faced judgement for misappropriating Chinese culture in her latest music video. Other big artist and social media advocates have been targeted with cultural appropriation.

On November 7, 2017, Youtube “Sailor J” uploaded an ironic makeup video exposing other youtubers for using an “Native American based look” in their makeup tutorials. With 1,169,682 views, people have responded in many ways.

During interviews with 3 students, I;ve gotten mix emotions from about all of them. For example

Student A: “I think that it’s okay to a certain extent. For example, braids. I’ve had someone someone tell me I couldn’t have braid because it wasn’t from my culture. When it comes to other things, there’s a limit. For example a hijab. If it’s not your culture or religion, you can’t make it a fashion statement and you especially can’t make it your own if you are just going to mock them.”

Student B: “I think it’s not right, make your own things up, and if you can't, give credit to the original people.”

Student C: “I feel that when it comes to smaller cultures like the Spanish culture, it become acceptable for cultural appropriation, however when it happens to another culture, it has to be a big deal.”

Although it is known to be used in satire forms, cultural appropriation has been becoming more and more popular amongst minority populations, causing more and more serious, yet very needed, conversation.

Although some cultures are seen as excuses and/or expectations other than the more... cliche and unexpected cultural views in which people would think abnormally out of the status quo and think something is wrong. Other than that, this is very well structured and applicable for a chosen argument.

    32. “Students, get to class on time!”

Feet move fast at sound of bell

      By Mariangelis Gonzalez

Students at School of the Arts feel that the number of minutes given in passing time is controversial.

At SOTA, passing time is four minutes long. Passing time affects all students as they depend on it to get to class.

Students spend their passing time in various ways. Some students go to their lockers and get anything they need for their next class. Others go to the restroom in order to avoid going during class. There are those who spend their time socializing or use their phones. Others tend to show unwanted PDA (kissing, touching, cuddling). Some get to class as soon as the bell rings eager for the lesson to start. Is four minutes enough time for all of that?

Administrators at the school have recently taken a look at tardiness. Every month, there are approximately 50 different students that receive Saturday detention for misconduct in the halls or tardiness.

Most teachers start class a few minutes after the bell rings. They give students a half sheet or make them write out a do now to refocus everyone. It can be difficult to get everyone back to the educational environment after they have had several conversations in the hall or have been on their phone for the past four minutes.

Evan Wilson, a social studies teacher at SOTA, says that passing time is perfect.

“I mean, it’s just perfect. If it was longer, people would just be in the halls. If it was shorter, no one would ever get to class on time.” Many students and staff agree with Wilson.

Some teachers feel like there is never enough time. Before the second bell rings, teachers have to make sure that they have all their papers printed, the new lesson on the board, and answer any questions. On top of that, all teachers have to make sure attendance is done within the first fifteen minutes of the period.

Paul Geary, a science teacher at SOTA, says that he wished passing time was a little longer. “Sometimes I have one class after another and it is hard to prepare myself for the next class when there are sometimes students who stay after for questions.”

Students sometimes feel rushed and pressured to get to class in four minutes, which stresses them out more than they already are. Many get ready before the first bell rings in fear of being late to their next class, and they miss those last few minutes of their education. Students feel like it is hard for them to get to the other side of the building in such a small amount of time.

      1. Passing time is perfect if you go straight to class, yet everyone has different needs and if you have to use the bathroom or go to your locker there's just not enough time, in my opinion.

    33. Part 2 Mariangelis Gonzalez

Malikya Russell, a senior at SOTA, feels like she always has to move fast to get to class. “There are people kissing in the hall, walking too slow, fights, lockers sometimes get stuck, and more. It can get tough to find some space to walk past others.” Other students at the library agreed with her statement and shared that teachers should be more sensitive when punishing a late student because it can be hard to get from the basement to the third floor.

Other schools differ from SOTA. Dobie Jr. High, a school in Texas, has two and a half minutes of passing time. The principal reports that the school has a safe and educational environment. With less than three minutes to get to class, the main focus of each student is to be on time. They might encounter a warm smile or hug in the hall, but don’t stop to socialize due to the short amount of time given between classes. Their main focus is stepping into class and being prepared to learn. This has caused a better learning environment since students don’t have time to gossip or to cause fights in the halls. Having a shorter passing time reduces the chances of students misbehaving in the halls.

At Carlmont High School in California, students get approximately ten minutes to get to their next class. They feel that it is the perfect amount since they are not rushed. Students are able to use the restroom and go to their lockers. This helps the educational system since students wouldn’t need to use the restroom during a lesson or go to their lockers to find homework during class. Although this is an advantage for the use of many, it can also be a disadvantage for the administrators if students waste the given time.

Every school has different passing times and reasons for those times. At SOTA, if passing time was extended, it would make the school day longer or the class periods shorter. It would have a big impact on our education.

As Brian Chandler, SOTA administrator says, “Early is on time and on time is late.”

I actually found this article interesting which I didn't really expect to because the topic of passing time wasn't very intriguing. The fact that the school is so split on this matter makes me wonder if there ever will be any change with SOTA's passing time. I like what you included at the end about the out of state schools with the drastically different passing times, that was interesting. After this article I can see the pros and cons of both shorter and longer passing time, great job avoiding bias.

The wife asked him to come out for dinner, “I’ll be out soon,” he replied. After few exchanged word, MrDeadMoth lashed out at his wife and physically harming her. Thudding noises and cryings can be heard in the background of the Twitch Stream.

Viewers has commented that domestic violence can apply to gamers as well with no excuses, and the gamer should suffer the consequence just as other domestic abuser had.

The video went viral, people took side with MrDeadMoth, saying the wife was “antagonizing him.”

“It seems as if he was streaming on Twitch, which can actually be a viable form of income nowadays. She could be interrupting him while he is trying to do his job”, said a reddit observer.

Others views it as MrDeadMoth should hold the responsibility of a husband and a dad. There has been several debates back and forth in whose fault it is.

“I'm not defending the guy for escalating it. But the point you make about this all being over a video game isn't the full story. It was his job to play video games, he communicates it poorly and in a derogatory manner, but he pays the family's bills through Twitch,” said another Reddit individual.

Domestic violence is not new to the community, it only has come to expand and changed the way people view and approached domestic violence.

Making a quick buck never seemed so easy

      By Angelica Otero

Young adults at School of the Arts like to discuss how they manage school, work and extracurricular activities.

The students shared how they enjoy working part-time jobs and claim they have ‘great bosses.’

The students varied in what their part-time job consisted of; some worked in movie theaters, with kids, and fast-food chains. All claim to enjoy their job description, which is why they continue to work. “I have a good boss and enjoy working with kids,’ said senior Graham Gauthier.

Although the students like their part-time jobs, others were frustrated by how much money they brought home. “I am not paid enough and have a stressful time balancing school work’, said Adnilem Santiago, who works part-time at Tinseltown Movie Theater, while attending school full time and participating in dance after school.

In New York State, children under the age of 18 must have a work permit and can only work for a set amount of hours per week in order for them to still be able to concentrate on school.

However, all the students would continue working despite some drawbacks.

    36. Do you have senioritis

      Or are you just lazy?

      By: Shania Washington

Over stressed seniors are becoming less capable of putting effort into their last year of high school.

Most seniors would say senioritis is real but administrators and parents would say otherwise, that it is not.

The epidemic of senioritis is the lack and or lost of motivation, which has crawled its way into the walls of many schools targeting and infecting mostly seniors.

“I am over school, i rather stay home and do nothing than come here everyday just to take notes. Even though i might not be ready to be out in the real world, i can say that i am tired all the time and always stressed due to school,” said an anonymous senior.

When ask the following questions: “Do you like being a senior”, to a group of seniors, majority answered with a “yes”, but also said that it was “way too stressful”.

Ask the question, “Do you sleep in class”? They answered “yes” and lastly, i ask, “ Have you cried due to this school year and everyone once again answered with a solid strong “yes”.

Seniors are burden with the juggling of academics, social life and working. On top of that, thoughts of what to do, where to go, and simply how life is after graduation fill their mind, leaving them with a huge headache.

“A culture of overachievement and “hyper-schooling” that leaves young people burnt out at a time that ought to be steeped in learning and opportunity” said Brennan Barnard.

The outcome is that these seniors do not complete assignments, receive lower grades, become lazy, skip class and find it difficult to get out of bed in the morning.

With the school year winding down, pressures reduce. After pushing themselves hard year after year, they get to finally walk across the stage leaving behind this disease called senioritis.

Senioritis may not be terminal, but it sure complicates the last year of school.

      Animal abuse

Animals are falling victim every year to abuse. It's been estimated that there are 900 to 2,000 people, who hoard animals worldwide.

Over 115 million dogs, cats, rabbits, monkeys among others killed in laboratory experiments worldwide for chemical, drug, food testing every year. This is cruelty and unacceptable.

“Animal abuse is cruel people who abuse their animals should be taken to jail. People who can’t take proper care of their own pet shouldn’t have a pet and should put it up for adoption”, said Melinda who attends School of The Arts.

Some signs shown as animal neglect are no shelter, collar to tight, starvation. The 5 top most abused dog breeds are chihuahua, greyhound, husky, galgo, and pitbulls.

The most common animal abuse today is dogfighting that has been reported in urban, suburban, and rural settings in all regions of the country.

“I never understand why people are cruel to animals they give unconditional love thankfully there are people who rescue these animals from their abuse,” according to Molly.

Without animals a lot of human beings lives would be different, because the majority of clothing is made from worldwide animals. Animals need to be respected in this world, so this animal cruelty needs to come to an END.

No living creature should be deprived of things that are needed to survive. You take in animals by choice, so if you are not willing to take care of the animal then why not find somebody who is? There are a lot of options other than neglecting them they just need to have the heart to do so.

Students and Staff at School of the Arts have been questioning how Administrators are handling shooting threats; Administrators rush to defend their procedures.

During the two weeks of threats relating to the school Administrators kept the threat under wraps for a week but as all things do rumors started to spread about an “inevitable” shooting.

Fear had generated from the lack of communication from the Administration towards the students and their families. Parents have contacted the school expressing their aggravations.

A sophomore from School of the Arts fears for her own life. “They suspended the boy for two days for bringing a gun to school, but i got long termed for getting into a fight; that doesn’t make any sense”, said the sophomore.

While asking around teachers have been saying the same thing; that the situation with the young man has been purely confidential and neither the Teachers nor Administrators can share any information.

Principal Nicastro released a statement to calm students and parents,"Out of an abundance of caution, I collaborated with the District Safety and Security team to investigate the situation, and they determined that there is no threat to our students or staff," said Nicastro.

Instead of enjoying their senior year of high school some students look at it as the most fearful and stressful year. Students think that their senior year is just filling out college applications and applying for scholarships when there’s more to it.

After spending 5 years in a school some would think that every student would be ready for their senior year but that wasn’t the case for a numerous amount of people that were interviewed due to lack of preparation.

“No I wasn’t prepared everyone says that it’s easy but it’s not, I think it’s harder because you have to be on top of things or you won’t graduate” - Nyasia Stanley

Opinions on preparation may differ between students based on class load and extracurricular activities. On the other hand Mya Fisher decided to refute the idea of not being prepared. Mya has been balancing her academics with extracurriculars for years now.

“I feel like I was prepared and I expected it to be like the rest of high school was but with more events and college things added” - Mya Fisher

Although there is a very popular proposition about senior year being a “breeze” and always having “senioritis” many juniors go into their senior year with fears. Getting rejection letters, falling behind in classes and not having a SAT score that is high enough may be the leading fears.

“I didn’t know if I would be able to handle the stress of filling out college applications along with FAFSA and TAP, I was also scared that I wasn’t going to have fun my last year of high school which was irrational thinking since this has been the best year so far.” - Erica White

“One of my fears are rejection letters due to not meeting all of the admission requirements and not having a SAT score that is high enough” - JL

Senior can be described in many ways, each way can be something new based on the person you’re asking. No one has the same senior year because everyone has different experiences.

I agree that students worry more than enjoy their senior year, but at the same time this year prepares you and makes you more responsible for college. This year has helped me learn that I need to do things on my own and not wait until I am actually in college. I do not see this as a relaxation period ,I consider it a preperation period.

    40. School Starting Times Negatively
      Affect the Student Mind

      Brandon Watson

Students are shown to be less successful in school due to how early school opens

It is true that students are more likely to have worse performance in school due to them being forced to wake up too early in the day, whether it’s from sleep deprivation to not being in the mood.

Scientists believe that early school starting times are negatively affecting students is because teens require the most time to rest their bodies since their teen years is when they experience the most body change, also known as puberty.

The lack of time of rest is not only affecting them physically but also mentally since their minds also need rest, as can get very tired during their classes.

It doesn’t help that most schools in the U.S. start before 8:30 a.m., which is considered to be the minimum time school should start for the students to go to school. Any time before that is too early as it doesn’t provide enough rest for the student mind.

According to Ms. Perez, she says “School should start later because it’s better for teenage minds; but it is nice to get out of work at 2:30 p.m.. So I’m torn!” Ms. Parker says “Studies show that school should start later; but wonders how it would work in after school activities.”

Although it is the student’s responsibility to plan out their bedtimes, school districts should still consider trying to make schools start later as opposed to earlier. This could make a great improvement for students as it could allow them to rest their minds more, but same for also the adults who work at schools

I too think that school starts too early. I agree that it is healthier for school to start later.

    41. Area 51
      what are you truly hiding?

      Genesis Aviles

The never ending battle between the people who believe extraterrestrials exist and who don’t continues.

There has since been a constant fight on what people truly think resides within one of the government’s most heavily guarded places: Area 51 .

Area 51, is a highly classified remote detachment of Edwards Air Force Base, within the Nevada Test and Training Range. The government base has been known to raise lots of opinions and growing speculations, ever since it was acquired in 1955. The base's current primary purpose is unknown to the public, but based on historical evidence, it most likely supports the development and testing of experimental aircraft and weapons systems.

“I believe that aliens do exist and that there are other things that the government is hiding from us in Area 51. I don't believe that they are just testing out weapons over there, there is something far greater than weapons living inside of there.” says Miliana Ramirez.

The intense secrecy surrounding the base has made it a frequent subject of conspiracy theories and a large component to the studies of UFO’s.

“There is no denying the fact that Area 51 is one of the world's greatest conspiracies, but in my opinion I think all of that alien and UFO stuff is false.” says Marizel Flores.

The very first sighting of a UFO was documented around second millennium BC in Egypt, which was described to look like “fiery disks” floating in the sky. Ever since then, there has been more and more reports on UFOs and even some reports on alien sightings as well.

Most sightings and reports don’t hold exact credibility, but that sparked official government UFO studies in the late 1940s. The 2017 revelation that the U.S. government was actively researching UFOs re-ignited world interest in UFOs and aliens.

    42. Cultural appropriation taking over mass media
Kylie Jenner boxer braids vs. cornrows

      Timani Bowens

Cultural appropriation has had big impact on a lot of people from different races and culture. It also has a big impact on corporate america because it’s a lot of standards that people have to keep up with from knowing how to present yourself and most importantly how you should have your hair.

When it comes to african americans some of our hairstyles are not suitable in situations , but when it comes to others like the kardashians they get praised for the hairstyles that african americans get bashed about. The problem is that these hairstyles would be acceptable for the kardashians but not african americans and there is no credit given ““When you appropriate black features and culture but fail to use your position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards your wigs instead of police brutality or racism.”

I’m not saying that no one can wear hairstyles that black women wear. There’s nothing wrong with wearing your hair in these styles. “However, it is unsettling to see these looks branded as “KKW Signature Braids,” and “Boxer Braids” by Kim Kardashian, or, what everyone has been calling the cornrows in the case of Kylie, “Birthday Braids.”

I think that the kardashians should have at least acknowledged the hairstyles and it would have been a better situation “The Kim K boxer braids scenario for example, that’s a hairstyle that’s very traditional to black culture and they’re saying like, ‘Oh, Kim K started this new trend’ and it’s really insulting actually.”

Correct, The Kardashians should at least give credit when due if their fans are giving credentials.

I agree that the kardashians generally appropriate looks from many cultures, I feel like that would be okay if they gave the styles credit and called them by there proper names

    43. Teaching in fear:
      Should educators be armed?
      By: Tessa Meyer

This year a school shooting in Florida claimed 17 lives. Two weeks after this horrific shooting the question on law makers’ minds was should teachers be armed?

In rural Texas smaller school districts have been arming teachers for 10 years. There is no way for the cop to get there in under 15 mins.

So how do urban educators feel about this? An educator at my school said, “I feel like the school would be more likely to have a shooting if teachers have guns.” - Teacher at School of the Arts.

In 2018 more children died of school shootings than actively deployed military members.

Paul Pittinaro a former service member and teacher here at school of the arts said, “in my opinion training teachers in first aid and crisis management is much more valuable than giving them weapons.”

There have been 1,300 school shooting incidents since 1970 while 2018 had the greatest number of incidents since 1970, with 82 recorded incidents.

While guns may work for rural communities, all urban teachers I have talked to feel as though arming teachers would be detrimental to their learning process.

On the other hand teachers and students had many recommendations like, mental health counseling, doing more formal lockdown drills, etc.

Now it's up to you to decide, what we can do to make our schools safer.

I agree that a change has to be made due to the many people who fell victim to a school shooting. Pittinaro is correct with giving teachers proper training because giving teachers a gun will only make things worse and will not make the school environment feel safe.

I agree with this decision because its a reasonable and smart finacial decision for the city. People were not coming to see fireworks. The city's decision to hold activities at the convention offers more entertainment than just standing around watching fireworks. I agree with the city's decision.
